Kicking the average teen sex comedy up several notches, American Pie became legendary for the iconic scenes. “We’ll just tell your mother we ate it,” says the coolest dad in the world (Eugene Levy), as he regrets telling his son Jim (Jason Biggs) that making love is like warm apple pie.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)

Judd Apatow’s directorial debut was a humdinger. Steve Carell’s performance as geeky, Andy Stitzer centres the film, as his co-workers try to help him to seal the deal when they find out he’s never had sex. Probably he should have skipped the waxing, though.

Eurotrip (2004)

Another teen comedy from the stable that brought us Old School and Road Trip, Eurotrip sees a group of randy teens heading to meet a busty German student in Berlin, travelling by way of London, Paris and Amsterdam. It does not win any awards because of the depiction of the European cultures but it does deliver on those laugh-out-loud moments. Did you also spot Matt Damon as a pierced, tattooed punk rocker?

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007)

Riffing off gritty, Oscar-winning docu-drama Walk Hard, The Dewey Cox Story plunged headfirst into this Spinal Tap territory. If you’ve ever wanted to see the Beatles arguing amongst themselves or Elvis at his most eccentric, this film has those comedic musical references in spades.

Love You, Man (2009)

Pulling a fun movie from an odd premise is what comedies do best, but there’s also a certain sweetness to I Love You, Man, that many films in this list lack. Engaged to the woman of his dreams (Rashida Jones), Peter (Paul Rudd) realises he doesn’t have a male friend who’s close enough to be his best man. Cue a swarm of awkward mandates that lead him to Sydney (Jason Segel), a man so nice to hang out with it could threaten the marriage.

Old School (2003)

In this movie, three men are heading into their mid-life crises and they start to reminisce about their college days. Then they decide to start up a frat house and relive those good times. Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughn are excellent fun, but it’s Will is the wild man who really shines.
