Netflix is all set to release a new TV series for its global audience on the digital platform with “The English Game.” The TV series is all set to be released on March 2020. This ensemble drama comes from the minds of “Downtown Abbey” creator and “Gosford Park” writer Julian Fellowes. It is a period drama showcasing the early and mid 19thcentury of England.
Cast (‘Kingsman’ and ‘GoT’ stars in the series)
The cast includes talented actors like Edward Holcroft (the Kingsman film series) as Arthur Kinnaird – ‘The First Lord of Football,’ Kevin Guthrie ( Sunshine on Leith)playing Fergus Suter, a Scottish native, considered to be the ‘First recognized professional Football player.”
The other cast includes GoT star Charlotte Hope, Niamh Walsh, Craig Parkinson, James Harkness, Ben Batt, Gerard Kearns, Henry Lloyd – Hughes.
The storyline is set in the 19th century of England, where class divides are still very much visible. The story promises to explore the origins of the world’s most beloved sport – Football, tracking it back to Northern England in mid-1800s. It also tells about the class division amongst society and prejudices.
The production began last spring 2019, and the shooting started in May 2019 till July – August. The shooting took place in Boston, Yorkshire, and a major part of the northwestst part of England.
In order to prepare for the series, the cast required to play football onscreen trained at Trafford Training Centre in Carrington, the training ground of Manchester United. They not only had to learn the skills of football but also learn the style that people played in the 1800s. Plus, the mannerisms of people during that period.

With such talented cast and backed up by fantastic writers and creators, it’s definitely a must watch series for 2020. For all the football fans, it’s going to show how the game originated plus the discrimination among the classes that people used to face during those times and how a game brought people together.
