Articles on the Wall Street Journal had given detailed accounts on why SpongeBob can be considered homosexual. It says that he lives in a pineapple in an underwater locale named Bikini Bottom. For his friend, he has a pink starfish who is called Patrick. Among his other friend is an octopus named Squidward. It is a gentle creature who likes a good old fashioned bubble bath and listens to classical music. At times the character also talks like Paul Lynde. Sometimes SpongeBob and Patrick hold hands together and watch a movie called The Adventures of the Mermaid Man and the Barnacle Boy. The reports left the conclusion to be drawn by the readers on whether SpongeBob was gay or not.
What Did the Writers Have to Say?
Creators of the show have confessed several times, that the character of SpongeBob is not gay. Yes, it has soft masculinity attached to it, but the creators mentioned that they have tried to portray the characters in a manner as asexual as possible. However, they have claimed that it was made for children from the age of 2 to 11 years. Several TV channels though have confirmed that there is a special time for telecasting the show as well. It is shown from 11 pm to 11:45 pm at night. At that hour of the night, television reviews show that gay people mostly between the age of 18 to 49 years.
Reaction to the Show
Many store owners have confirmed that the show does appeal to gay people. Shop owners in Atlanta and San Francisco said that most of the SpongeBob merchandise was bought by gay people. Within days of keeping them on the shelves, they were completely sold and out of stock.
