IDC, a research analyst firm based in America has recently published a report which states that OnePlus has managed to break into the top-five flagship smartphone makers list thanks to the strong sales of its 6 and 6T variants. This data was obtained by analyzing the sales figures of the major smartphone makers in the fourth quarter of 2018. IDC defines a high-end smartphone as a smartphone which costs over $500.
As OnePlus only releases two flagships each year, its marketing tactics are geared to only selling these two phones whereas the other manufacturers release multiple variants of smartphones every year. This allows OnePlus to be considered as an exclusive brand and the price offerings of this maker are so aggressive that it costs almost $200 to $300 less than other smartphones with similar specs.
OnePlus’s “Flagship Killer” worked well for the company in its initial years, but it never managed to make a dent in the North American market as it lacked a carrier which was willing to partner with the brand for its sales in the American sector.
This new revelation was only possible due to the partnership between OnePlus and T Mobile, which is the third largest carrier in the American market. This strategic partnership meant that OnePlus was able to create major headlines when it offered the OnePlus 6T in the T Mobile retail stores in America. This was the first time when US shoppers were able to buy OnePlus phones directly from the carrier. Before this, OnePlus was never widely available in the US stores, and Americans considered this brand as a cheap Chinese smartphone maker.
A spokesperson from OnePlus recently revealed that the first-month sales of its 6T variant in the US were almost 250 percent higher than the first-month sales of its 6 variant, which lacked a partnership with a US carrier. This help from T Mobile has undoubtedly helped OnePlus to make a serious dent in the US market, as consumers are starting to shift from the premium smartphone makers such as Apple and Samsung as the prices of their flagships keep increasing and crossing the $1000 price tag.
OnePlus recently broke their sales record in India, becoming the number 1 premium smartphone maker in the Asian subcontinent. It overtook Samsung due to higher than expected sales figures of its 6 and 6T variants in the Indian market.
OnePlus has dominated the premium smartphone market in India for three consecutive quarters, as Samsung takes a beating due to its pricier, $1000 smartphones which customers deem too expensive.
As OnePlus gets ready to launch its OnePlus 7 in early 2019, it is shaping up to be a great year for the company as it is also aiming to launch a 5G version of its premium brand with the world’s first Snapdragon 855 SOC (System on a chip). OnePlus has teased about a major announcement at the 2019 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and fans of OnePlus can expect the brand to reach even newer heights with its 5G and 7 variants. OnePlus could soon topple the other bigger smartphone brands such as Samsung and Huawei in the North American market if it keeps this momentum.
