As the scare of coronavirus has hit the world, a virus that has taken more than 1 lakhs life and has infected approx 17 lakhs people around the globe. In the middle of all this, a rumour about the celestial object is being discussed on social media a lot. According to the rumour, the world is going to end on April 29th this month.
How did the rumour start:
This misleading news was first started by Daily Express when it published news about it with the headline as “Asteroid warning: NASA tracks a 4KM asteroid approach – Could end civilisation if it hits”. This led to people fearing that the asteroid will hit the earth and thus will end life on earth. This news created a lots of confusion and sensation in the readers. Video with a logo of Headlines India was posted on Facebook by many users like Mularam Bhakar Jaat Osian and Adbhut Anokha Aparajit about the end of the world on April 29.
What are the claims made:
Claims have been made that oncoming 29th April human civilization is going to end. The news and the videos have claimed that on 29th April an asteroid with an official name 52768 (1998 OR2) as big as Himalayans is going to hit the planet Earth surface and thus would destroy the earth and the life on the earth.
What’s the reality of the claims:
The claims are completely misleading and earth is not going to end on 29th April. It is true that an asteroid is passing earth on 29th April but the asteroid 52768 (1998 OR2) is going to fly past the earth at a distance of approximately 4 million miles. NASA is continuously keeping an eye on the trajectory speed, and distance of this particular asteroid 52768 (1998 OR2) from the earth surface. The asteroid was first discovered by NASA in 1998, since then it is having its eye on the asteroid and is monitoring every movement of the asteroid.
The asteroid 52768 (1998 OR2) is not in the list of Sentry Impact Risk Page of NASA which keeps an eye on future earth impact events. Thus the asteroid with an approximate diameter of 1.8 km to 4.1 km will past earth at a speed of around 20000 miles per hour and a distance of 3.9 million miles which is about 16 times the distance between earth and moon. Thus the earth has no danger from the asteroid and on April 29 the world will not end.
