The 2018 recipients of the Turing Award include the likes of Geoffrey Hinton, who is the Vice President of the biggest search engine of the planet, Google. Some other notable recipients include Yann LeCun from Facebook which is the biggest social networking site on the globe with over 2 billion monthly active users, and Yoshua Bengio, who is AI Research Center Mila’s Scientific Director.
All these three recipients have made significant strides in developing conceptual frameworks for deep neural networks. This recent development has created breakthroughs in the field of AI and showcased the benefits of the technology, according to the Association for Computing Machinery.
Geoffrey Hinton has proved with his work that a back propagation algorithm could assist neural networks to solve complex problems that were deemed unfeasible earlier. Facebook’s LeCun was the principle individual behind the development of technologies involved in modern day computer vision. Bengio, on the other hand, helped create generative adversarial networks, which means that two creative networks are pitted against each other for quality control purposes, thus creating much better original images.
The trio behind these developments will receive the Turing Award at an event which is scheduled to take place in June the 15th of 2019. While all these individuals are well known and highly celebrated figures, their recognition points to a growing trend of change in the AI industry.
