The Covid-19 pandemic has forced the scientist group to search for a possible antibody that could help to stop the growth of SARS-CoV-2. One such firm is Moderna Inc., which on Monday(May 18), reported that it has achieved quite promising results, in the first phase of human trials.
Where Moderna Inc. based upon?
Moderna Inc. is a leading biotech firm in the United States, which announced the development of a vaccine against the SARS-CoV-2. They have already entered the first phase of the trials in March, with the help of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). It was heavily funded by the US Govt. to come up with a solution to tackle the virus that has devasted all human lives.
Moderna Corona Virus Vaccine is showing positive results.
There’s always hope, and it seems to have come true lately. The phase-I of the trials have shown a silver lining. The eight participants of the 45 subjects, who were dosed twice, have developed the antibodies similar to those of who have recovered from the COVID-19 disease. It hasn’t shown any major side effects though.
The mRNA-1273(vaccine) has shown a more substantial number of the antibody levels in the eight participants, who were dosed with two doses of 25 and 100 µg.
With the breakthrough, Moderna has been approved for the second phase of the human trials by the FDA. They are reported to follow in the subsequent days. Next, they’re targetting a larger group of 600 members to find more efficient results regarding the appropriate dose that is required.
How Does the Vaccine Work?
The general vaccine that we are used to contains the required proteins, which when injected in the body, fights the virus. But the mRNA vaccine which Moderna is using makes use of our body’s biological process, to produce the necessary proteins to suppress the virus. This technology has not been used much earlier before.
Need for More Doses
With a massive number of affected individuals across the world, the demand is far greater than the production. Moderna CEO, Bancel stated that they are operating on a plan to boost the production process, so everyone could be benefitted from the vaccine.
It would take further trials to get the vaccine approved for consumer use. Till then we should adhere to the quarantine measures and stay home.
