US president Donald Trump recently announced one antimalarial drug to be an effective cure for COVID-19 and he claimed that it is approved by FDA. He said in his briefing that the States will make the drug immediately available for the treatment of coronavirus infection.
Trump suggested Chloroquine for the treatment of COVID-19 would be effective. Chloroquine is being used for the treatment of malaria, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. It is approved by FDA for its use as an antimalarial drug already. Though trump said the FDA has approved the drug for treatment of coronavirus, FDA commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn stated that FDA has not approved of any drug for the treatment of coronavirus as of now. He also clarified that as drugs like chloroquine are already approved for the treatment of other diseases , medical practitioners can use the drugs for clinical trials on an ‘Off-Label’ basis.
South Korea and China are already using Chloroquine as the treatment of COVID-19. Chloroquine can be made available to the hospitals in large numbers in very little time. Effectiveness of the drug is not yet proved by the FDA. Hahn said the FDA is working with the officials and governments about the effectiveness of chloroquine for the treatment of coronavirus. Studies are undergoing about the treatment but the process takes time and is necessary even if the pandemic situation is an emergency.
Another drug has been suggested is Remdesivir which is used in the treatment of Ebola. Remdesivir along with chloroquine is in clinical trials in China and it will be prescribed to the coronavirus patients in the US.
