Apple TV’s ‘Shantaram’ is a series based on
Gregory David Roberts’ novel starring Charlie Hunnam. The adventurous story revolves around a convicted Australian bank robber and heroin addict. He escapes prison, flees to India and find himself in the slums of Mumbai. The plot has a gripping story which shows the beauty in ugliness and gives the message of redemption. The novel has been published in 39 languages and sold six million copies till now.
Halt in production
On June, 2018, Apple Inc. announced television adaptation of the novel for Apple TV. Eric Warren Singer was appointed to serve as the head author and show runner. He is an American screenwriter best known for American Hustle (2013) and Maverick. However, the series was put on hiatus in December due to a writing backlog. As Singer failed to complete the necessary scripts for the series, the filming was paused. For now only two out ten episodes have been shot. Production is most likely to resume after the end of monsoon that lasts from June to October. “A longer push will become official when we are assured that we would not be ready to shoot before monsoon season in India”, the crew said referring to the weather in the monsoon season of India.
New showrunner to be assigned
As Eric Warren Singer departs, search for the new showrunner has began. Singer will remain as an executive producer. Sources tells that the recruitment of the new showrunner should happen soon however the name is not yet announced. The producers are immensely satisfied by what they have shot till now. Justin Kruzel (Assassin’s creed) is signed to direct the next 5 episodes.
‘Shantaram’ is produced by Paramount Television Studios and Anonymous Content. The show has been filming in the sets of both Australia and India. The cast includes Charlie Hunnam as Lin, Richard Roxburgh and ‘Indian netflix queen’ Radhika Apte. With such a wonderful cast Shantaram will be able to cope up by the end of the monsoon season.
